Today's compression test resulted in the following. Warm Engine, Dry test, throttle and Air valve in closed position. #1 - 120. #2 - 110. #3 - 110. #4 - 110. I am happy to see the consistency but expected to see higher numbers. Numbers were the same with a cold engine .

Turn the engine over for about 5 seconds and then do your compression test . I've never done a compression check on it, so I was curious what would show up. I ran the car till the temp gauge was at NOT, and started with the #1. I didn't squirt oil into the . Turn the engine over for about 5 seconds and then do your compression test again. The rings probably are dry and maybe stuck. The MMO will also help free the rings, especially if it sits in there for a few days before .

Finally got around to a compression test today. First time I've done the test on this car since buying it in 2019. Cylinder 1 = 100psi. Cylinder 2 = 120psi. Cylinder 3 = 130psi with the blackened spark plug. Cylinder 4 = . I get the oil, filter and spark plugs changed on the MGB, adjust the tappets and give it a fighting chance of passing a compression test. Join me to see how it does! .more. A compression test will tell you if your engine has good compression. An engine is essentially a self-powered air pump, so it needs good compression to run efficiently, .

Well, I just completed the compression check and was surprised by the results: 175, 175, 172, 173. This was totally unexpected, since the engine would have had low compression . Re: Worrisome compression test results on my MGB 1. You now have 2 choices: 1) Leak down test as Hap advised to determine exactly where the problem lies. 2) Pull the . Anyway, the test results are further confirmation of the basic soundness of the engine which is good news. With this test complete, I can now remove further engine components which is good preparation for the re-spray.

Re: Worrisome compression test results on my MGB 1 If you want a piece of mind, that you arn`t tearing into your engine "Willy Nilly" then a leakdown test is the way to go. It can tell you {Like Hap said} where the specific problem lay, and which part is the culprit. {be it a ring, valve, or gasket} Or even IF there is a problem at all. As already said, the compression test tells you if there is an issue, The leakdown test points you to where that issue is. My SOP is compression test first. Then, if necessary, do the leakdown test to ID the source of low or different compression. Make a repair plan based on that data. In your case, if the leakdown test passes with flying . I ran a compression test on my 1977 MG Midget. I had 100 psi in 3 of the cylinders and 75 in the other. I don't know what it should be. . Don't use a test gauge and expect accurate results. I've seen many a Harbor Freight (or cheap Amazon) gauges set read a max of 100 psi even if the engine is producing 175. Good Morning All..I'm looking for feedback regarding the compression test results on my stock 1275 engine: #1 - 150 #2 - 140 . I got 120 on all cylinders on my low compression 8:1 1275 engine. My Sprite/MG Midget Handbook and Service Manual lists a compression of 120 for a 8.8:1 1275 engine (seems a bit low). However, I will be rebuilding .

While I'm at it, I ran a compression test. Results: Cyl 1: 135 lbs. (not bad, not good), Cyl 2: 165 (good), Cyl 3: 135, Cyl 4: 160 (also good). . But remember that most MGB pistons have a dish to them. Adding the oil will fill up that dish temporarily making them higher compression pistons. So the test may not be conclusive.

A compression test will tell you if your engine has good compression. An engine is essentially a self-powered air pump, so it needs good compression to run efficiently, cleanly and to start easily. As a rule, most engines should have 140 to 160 lbs of cranking compression with no more than 10% difference between any of the cylinders. As already said, the compression test tells you if there is an issue, The leakdown test points you to where that issue is. My SOP is compression test first. A leakdown test will not only tell you if the compression leaking out of a cylinder is acceptable, but it will also tell you where the escaped compression is going. I doubt that you have a head gasket problem. Fun thing: If you do the leakdown test, tape a rubber glove over the exhaust pipe, the valve cover opening and the mouth of the carbs.

Hello, 2nd post Today before it got dark I did an engine compression test real quick. MGB 1976 - 27070mi on rebuilt - recently adjusted valves, cold @ 0.15 - measured on warm engine with air filter on - measured with 6 strokes on ignition (5sec) Checked the compression in the cylinders. Took plugs out and checked each cylinder in line and wrote down the readings (i mistakenly noted bar rather than the psi reading) – when converted the readings are about 180psi which represents 10:1 compression ratio which is good and quite high. A previous owner had the engine bored.

Today's compression test resulted in the following. Warm Engine, Dry test, throttle and Air valve in closed position #1 - 120 #2 - 110 #3 - 110 #4 - 110 I am happy to see the consistency but expected to see higher numbers. N I carried out a compression test this morning and here are the results: working from the gearbox side to the cam belt side: 12.1 bar 13.0 bar 13.0 bar 14.0 bar two slightly problematic cylinders. the 12.1 is a bit low but looked dry inside. Compression check on all 4 cylinders on a '77 MGB. Applies to pretty much all old engines. Mine came out to be in decent spec, but #2 is about 7.5% lower t. Compression test results - weird. When performing a compression test the engine should be at normal working temperature, remove all the plugs, and wedge the throttle wide open, then test each cylinder 'dry' noting the results. From the Workshop Manual high-compression engines (8.8:1) should be 160psi and low compression (8.0:1) 130psi for 18G engines. I have a 1978 MGB with a recently replaced cylinder head assembly that since the repair has been producing white/blue smoke on acceleration. I did a compression test and got the following results: cylinder 1: 125 psi cylinder 2: 122 psi cylinder 3: 132 psi cylinder 4: 1 Go to youtube and look at John Twists videos #46 How to Check Compression; #49-Diagnosis of Faulty Compression; and #50 Determining the cause of Bad Compression. After adding the oil and running another compression test, #49 is a good 2nd test to confirm if the head needs to be removed. Doing a compression test, is a good way to measure the condition of, the rings, cylinders, and valves. So, if your engine is running rough or is lacking power, consider doing a compression test. Also, it is important to perform a compression test every time a tune-up is done, as part of preventative maintenance.
